Looking to book a trail ride? Click HERE. Our trail rides are a relaxing way to get outside, enjoy some gorgeous terrain and well cared for horses.

The Short

We base our Lockhart Ranch Trail Rides, $115, (Click HERE) and Horsemanship Trail Experiences, $185 and up, on various factors.  Please verify with your group before you sign other people up.  Visit our General Services Page for links to reviews, media collaborations and highlights.

Trail Ride: Beautiful, fun, relaxing. Session is 1.5-2 hours.  It’s Austin.  Enjoy.

Horsemanship Trail Experience: Beautiful, challenging, rewarding. Session is 3-4 hours

The Long

Our Trail Rides (Click HERE) and Horsemanship Trail Experiences overlap in the same places, so participants of both experiences will enjoy our gorgeous trails.  Which to choose?  It depends on what you are looking for out of your ride. Both are suitable for beginners through experienced riders.

The overlap of spaces is great! It means that if a family with mixed needs and wants is signing up, everyone can pick the ride that’s right for them!  Grandma and Grandpa and the five year old grandson want to take it easy?  Sign up for the trail ride!  Mom, Dad and Horse enthusiast, 12 year old daughter can enjoy the horsemanship experience.  Mom, Dad and Daugter arrive at 9:30.  Grandma and Grandpa can hang at the farm OR make a quick trip into town for some shopping, hot chocolate and tea, a visit to the candy store, the Caldwell County Jail Museum, our beautiful courthouse or the city park all within one mile.

When we plan horseback rides we take into experience many factors including:

  • Rider experience level;
  • Rider age, height to weight ratio and body type;
  • Total number of very young or mature riders;
  • Socio-emotional, physical or learning challenges;
  • Previous horse trauma cases;
  • Personality type and lifestyle activity levels and choices.
  • We recommend you book two weeks in advance.  You are welcome to TEXT 512-213-5776 to request a day-of booking at the Lockhart location.  Please submit each rider’s age, height, weight and riding experience so we can expedite your request.
  • As always, we ask you to please review our FAQ’s Page

Our horse trail rides are fun, relaxing and held with great company.  If you’re looking for an intro to riding this is a great start.  If you’d like to learn more about our horsemanship experience, or you’re not sure which experience is right for you, please read more!  Need more information? Click HERE to read about the Horsemanship Experience and the Ranch Ride.  Austin TX, It’s THE place to be!

We specialize in providing small group custom-tailored horsemanship trail experiences and ranch rides to the general public for one-time rides as well as to regular riders hoping to take weekly riding lessons with us.  You may hear trail companies boasting that they are not “nost-to-tail” only to experience being “wrangled” up and down a beach or along a path.  If you’re looking for a rich horseback riding experience, read more about our horsemanship experience. You’ll be on a real, responsive horse that’s going to change it’s response to you based on the position of your hand, foot, sits bones, head and back positions.  Not sure if this is a good activity for you?  If you are interested in learning about horses, learning more about horses, or improving your riding (which helps lead to a happier, healthier horse), then this is the right place for you!  If you “already know how to ride,” you may be frustrated when our guides suggest you change your hand position by a few millimeters.  But that’s the real deal: these are real horses that will behave differently based on such subtleties as how you breath or where you look with your eyes.

Group and Private Horsemanship Sessions are ideal for beginners through experienced riders who want a more dynamic experience. We recommend children be experienced ages 6-9 years old or beginners 10+ to participate. Any rider who participates in the horsemanship experience must be capable of following safety protocol.  If you have a special consideration, please make sure you speak with us over the phone before booking.  Some factors that contribute to how we balance groups include total number of riders as well as the aforementioned bullets.

Horseback riding on responsive horses in open spaces is challenging. That’s part of the fun of the Horsemanship Trail Experience. Yes! Part of the fun is the moderate to high activity level and the challenge. This is not a nose to tail trail, and many people experience a great approach using the fundamentals of horsemanship, walking away prepared to feel a little sore the next day! If you’re looking for pure relaxation, let us know! We can bring out an additional guide to work with you one-on-one and pull your horse along whenever necessary or create a custom private ride for you or your group. Want to read a little bit more about perceptions, expectations, and realities? Read our blog on our trail-based, lesson-based horsemanship experiences: What to Expect During Your Horseback Riding Lesson on the Trail.

While we do a great job of differentiating instruction for different skill levels of riders and ages, the horsemanship may not be appropriate for all groups. If you have a mixed group with some riders who wish to have a more relaxing trail ride, you can book your trailer land horsemanship at the same time. The horsemanship group rides in the same areas as the trail ride at the same time, so that both sets of riders can enjoy being together at once.

Our trail ride, while still more instructional than the horsemanship experience, is not so much about steering the horse as traveling along and enjoying the trail. Families, Mature riders and group parties who have folks who are not wanting to take the responsibility of following regular instruction on the ride should select the Ranch Ride. Riders who have been on many trail rides before should select the Ranch Ride trail. Riders who already know how to ride and do not want instruction should select the Ranch Ride. The Ranch Ride is a moderate activity level experience. It’s more laid-back and leisurely.

Riders who are enthusiastic about learning how to improve their riding and pushing the limits of their understanding and ability (whatever that ability is) should select the Horsemanship Experience.

We never let cost impede a group or individual from riding.  If you have read our reviews and website and you are familiar with what we do but cannot afford the ride, please call us and speak with us directly.  There are always weeds that need to be pulled in our voyage to develop organic grazing land for our livestock.  Come get your hands dirty or ask about research and writing opportunities that we have as part of a work-reflect-write-and-ride approach.  Please keep in mind that last minute requests for such opportunities are difficult to fulfill.

Looking for information on regular riding lessons?  The average student who rides and learns with us for a year will spend approximately $35 a session.  Please sign up for a horsemanship class and we will assess your ability and riding frequency. You’ll be able to come back the following week (s) at a generously discounted rate.

On our Ranch Trail Ride you’ll enjoy a brief greeting and grooming of your horse.  This experience does not require as much instruction on grooming, handling on the ground or steering directions.   Travel along and enjoy the trail! Families, Mature riders and group parties who have folks who are not wanting to take the responsibility of following regular instruction on the Horsemanship Trail Experience should select the Ranch Ride. Riders who have been on many trail rides before should select the Ranch Ride trail. Riders who already know how to ride and do not want instruction should select the Ranch Ride. Riders who are enthusiastic about learning how to improve their riding and pushing the limits of their understanding and ability (whatever that ability is) should select the Horsemanship Trail Experience

The terrain of both of the rides is similar.  The Ranch Trail Ride is more structured, more enclosed, more “trail.”  The Horsemanship Trailriding Experience is in more open spaces, more direction, more contact with the horse.

Here’s a visitor from Spain trying out a ride on Rocky in our Horsemanship Class, followed by Simona on Smurf. Simona is one of our regular riders. Regular Riders enjoy great price reductions and specials like riding to town, trailering to new places and camping out. If you’re looking for a one time ride, great! We can do that, too. Check out our trail rides for a fun and relaxing thing to do on your Austin vacation. Want to try to pick up the pace or see about some water crossings? Ask about the horsemanship experience. What to do in Austin? Come ride with us!
Folks who ride in the horsemanship experience will enjoy the opportunity to do some bareback riding. One time ride? Ask if we can accommodate you. Experienced rider? Make sure you let us know. Pictured here is Sara and her mount, Lady Hawk (aka Black aka Fire Breathing Dragon Mare). Regular riders are always encouraged to get comfortable riding bareback. It’s a workout, and a great way for our local Austin residents to stay fit!
Our trail rides are a great way to soak up the sun in Austin, TX. Pictured here is Noname, a registered quarter horse mare who participates in trail rides and our horsemanship experience. Noname is a registered AQHA mare with old ranch bloodlines. She is for sale.
Whether you chose to do the horsemanship experience or the trail ride, you’ll love the views. Panoramic scenes out of a movie dot the valley as you ride along the bluff top, getting a peak of where you’ll get to ride: around the pond, by the creek and wetlands, through the woods and hills. All of our Austin locations are beautiful. This picture is in Lockhart, which is just a 20-35 minute drive away from Austin. Don’t forget to try the BBQ in town!
