Things to do in Austin: Zilker Park

2100 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704

Yesterday, we wrote a post on The Nature and Science Center. Zilker park makes for a great add-on to your visit to the Nature and Science Center. These Austin hot spots are located next to each other, and you can park under the overpass next to the park to visit Zilker or the Nature and Science Center. Plan on hitting the park early when the day is cool, and keep an eye out for goodies you might take to the trading counter, such as interesting leaves, feathers, stones or even bones and shells.

Zilker is a gorgeous, sprawling 350 acre recreational space that’s a favorite amongst Austinites. Located in south Austin near Barton Creek and the Colorado River, this publicly-owned park was donated by Andrew Jackson Zilker in the early 1900s. There is always a good crowd at the park looking for things to do, with people utilizing the hike and bike trails that surround Lady Bird Lake, which has a slew of activities in and of itself.

Sadly there is no horseback riding permitted in the park, although you might catch a glimpse of a cowgirl here and there on the Austin roads surrounding Zilker. If you’re not looking to get your hike and bike on, there are many shady and sunny spots to settle in for a picnic or a game of pick up soccer. Cool off in Barton Springs after your day. Just be ready, it’s pretty cold if you’re to accustomed to swimming in a fresh, spring-fed natural pool.

If you’re joining us in the winter time, make sure to check out the Zilker Trail of Lights. Be dazzled by the light show, which is Austin’s biggest holiday tradition. More than 400,000 people make their way to Zilker Park each year to see the 2 million lights. Originally, the Austin Trail of Lights was just a small gathering called the Yule Fest in 1965. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department held the display, and now that Austin is 54 years into the tradition, the Trail of Lights now boasts more than 65 displays.

Check out Do512 for a list of current events. Even if there’s not a special, you’ll be hard pressed not to have a lovely picnic and hike or bike ride around this Austin staple. When you come to visit Maverick Horseback Riding, there is so much for you to do in the area. As always, ask your guide for tips on where to go and what to do! We love to share our favorite hangouts, eateries and hot spots.

Happy Travels!
